Syllabus
- Overview of matrix computations. Floating point arithmetic. Analysis of round-off errors.
- Solution of linear systems. Sensitivity and perturbation analysis. Gaussian elimination with partial pivoting, Cholesky factorization, and their stability.
- Singular Value Decomposition (SVD).
- QR factorization. Householder triangulation. Solution of least squares problems by QR method and SVD. Sensitivity analysis.
- Eigenvalue problems. Sensitivity and perturbation analysis. Power, inverse power, Rayleigh quotient and subspace iterations. QR algorithm with shifts and its convergence. Other eigenvalue algorithms.
- Pseudospectra of matrices; their analysis and applications.
- Numerical functional analysis. Approximation by finite rank operators.

Advanced Instructional School on Numerical Linear Algebra is being organised in Guwahati during the December 2010 and is funded by NBHM.

Location
The Institute can be reached by road, rail or air. Since it is located on the outskirts of the city of Guwahati, it is well connected to other parts of the country by road, rail or air.
Guwahati is well connected by air, rail and road with the rest of the country. There are direct air services from/to New Delhi and Kolkata with connectivity to all major cities in the country and direct train services from/to all major cities in the country and direct train services from/to all the metropolis and other major cities. Indian Airlines, Air Sahara, Jet Airways, Deccan Air and SpiceJet operate regular flights to and from Guwahati.
It is around 20 km from the heart of the city and around 45 min drive from the airport. To reach the institute from the city, there is the institute bus service that runs regularly to and from the city. It terminus in the city is near the Institution of Engineers Building which is quite close to the Railway Station.

Commuting to the Institute from the city
For commuting from the station to the North Guwahati campus, Tata sumos and auto-rickshaws are available. IIT Guwahati has also its own transportation facilities to ply to and fro from North Guwahati campus to the city.
Flights to Guwahati
Guwahati is well connected to most major cities of India via major airlines like Indian Airlines,Jet Airways, Go Air, Kingfisher, Spicejet and Indigo. There are several direct flights to Delhi and Kolkata on all days of the week. There is a prepaid taxi service at the airport.
Taxis are available for transport within the city also but are without meters and fares have to be negotiated and the same applies to autorickshaws. There is also an extensive network of city bus services.
