Speakers and Syllabus

An NCM funded Teacher Enrichment Workshop (TEW) on Group Theory, Analysis and Topology was successfully held at Doon University, Uttarakhand, during 09 - 14 October 2017. The participants were teachers and PhD students from Dehradun and nearby cities.

Speakers: The courses were delivered by the following speakers:

  • Prof. Rama Rawat (IIT Kanpur)
  • Dr. Mahender Singh (IISER Mohali)
  • Dr. Aribam Chandrakant Sharma (IISER Mohali )
  • Dr. Rajendra Prasad Pant (VNIT Nagpur)

Courses: Following the NCM guidelines, each speaker took a course of six lectures and a tutorial. Also, to engage mathematics faculty of the host university, a guest lecture by Dr. A. R Gairola (Department of Mathematics, Doon University) was also held during the
workshop. The actual syllabus covered by each speaker was as planned and is as follows:

• Prof. Rama Rawat: Introduction to Fourier series, definition and examples, convergence of a Fourier series, convolutions and good kernels, continuous function with diverging Fourier series, Riemann-Lebesgue lemma, some applications including the isoperimetric inequality, notion of Fourier transform on R, and Plancherels formula.
• Dr. Mahender Singh: Quotient topology, examples of quotient spaces, homotopy, con- tractible spaces and homotopy type, fundamental group and its properties, fundamental group of circle, fundamental group of spheres and Euclidean spaces.
• Dr. Aribam Chandrakant Sharma: Field extensions, algebraic extensions, perfect fields, separable and normal extensions, Finite fields, algebraically closed fields, automorphisms of extensions, Galois extensions and Galois group, fundamental theorem of Galois theory, glimpses of algebraic number theory.
• Dr. Rajendra Prasad Pant: Review of point set topology, definition and examples of topological spaces, continuous maps, separation axioms, compactness and
connectedness, homeomorphisms, construction of new topologies.
