Of  1 hr.		 Introduction to the theory of Rings and Modules
Dr. Dinesh Khurana Associate Prof.  PU, CHD.  4 lectures each of 1hr and 30 minutes. Basics of Ring Theory. The emphasis will be on understanding and constructing as many examples as possible..The fundamental notions of subrings, ideals, quotient rings, homomorphisms etc. will be discussed in detail. We will also discuss the questions about the embedding of rings in other rings.

One of the most important results in number theory is the fundamental theorem of number theory. One may wonder if the result holds in arbitrary integral domains also. It was realized a long back that the Fermat's Theorem would follow quite easily if the fundamental theorem of number theory were true in rings of integers of number fields. But unfortunately this is not the case. So people started looking for domains which satisfy the fundamental theorem of number theory. Such rings are called unique factorization domains (UFDs). We will discuss UFDs and their relationships with other important classes of domains like principal ideal domains, Euclidean domains etc.

The ring of polynomials over a commutative ring R is an important ring extension of the ground ring R and plays an important role in the theory of rings. Besides its construction, some basic properties of R that get carried over to the polynomial ring will be discussed. Group of units of the polynomial ring over a commutative ring will be calculated. Polynomial rings that are unique factorization domains and that are principal ideal domains will be studied. Ideal structure of the polynomial ring over a field will also be discussed. We will also discuss the maximal ideals of the polynomial ring over the ring of integers.
